Career Role Models - Who Are Yours?
My Granny retired in 1988 after nearly 40 years working as a teacher - retiring as a Deputy Head.
She worked before she was married, then had to stop for a while when she did get married - thanks to Irish Law.
But she returned to the classroom, even when it was frowned upon. By her peers, friends and society pretty much.
Even with 5 kids while her husband worked across in the UK, she worked.
That drive, that tenacity, that pure determination - and love for what she did is something that I think about often.
It's something she passed on to her daughter (my Mam) and something that was passed on to me.
Our Role Models don't always have to be the famous folk, the onscreen motivators or people who feel out of reach.
They can be those who surround us daily, family or friends who demonstrate qualities we want to own, someone in our community who shows up every single time.
A while back I asked some people to share 3 words they'd use to describe me and 'tenacious' or 'determined' showed up in every response. I'd never thought these words fit me before.
Now I'm proud to own them. Because of where they came from. Because of who I learned this from.
Role Models - don't forget to thank yours.
